Apple iPod Review - Touch vs Classic vs Nano vs Shuffle

Preface

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

iPod is a brand of portable media players designed and marketed by Apple Inc. and launched on October 23, 2001. The product line-up includes the hard drive-based iPod Classic, the touchscreen iPod Touch, the video-capable iPod Nano, and the screenless iPod Shuffle. The iPhone can function as an iPod but is generally treated as a separate product. Former iPod models include the compact iPod Mini and the spin-off iPod Photo (since reintegrated into the main iPod Classic line). iPod Classic models store media on an internal hard drive, while all other models use flash memory to enable their smaller size (the discontinued Mini used a Microdrive miniature hard drive). As with many other digital music players, iPods, excluding the iPod Touch, can also serve as external data storage devices. Storage capacity varies by model.

Apple's iTunes software can be used to transfer music to the devices from computers using certain versions of Apple Macintosh and Microsoft Windows operating systems. For users who choose not to use Apple's software or whose computers cannot run iTunes software, several open source alternatives to iTunes are also available. iTunes and its alternatives may also transfer photos, videos, games, contact information, e-mail settings, Web bookmarks, and calendars to iPod models supporting those features. Apple focused its development on the iPod line's unique user interface and its ease of use, rather than on technical capability. As of September 2008, more than 173 million iPods had been sold worldwide, making it the best-selling digital audio player series in history.

iPod Touch

One of the most innovative iPods is the iPod touch. This is similar in design to the ever-popular iPhone, without all of the bells, whistles, and phone capabilities.

The iPod touch is great because it has a large screen that makes it perfect to watch movies and TV shows and play video games.

However, some people lament the fact that the iPod touch is more expensive than other models. It also has a small amount of storage for something of this nature.

Even so, you will probably be able to fit enough of the things you love for this to be well worth your time. If you’re desperate for an iPod touch but want to save money, you could always buy a refurbished model that will be as good as new.

iPod Classic

The iPod classic is one of the easiest iPod reviews to do. It is simply a great product that expands on the original iPod models that we’ve all come to know and love.

The main reason that so many people love the classic is because of the massive amount of storage space. There is a 160GB model and an 80 GB model! You would be able to download all of the movies, TV shows, and video games you wanted.

Even with all of the great improvements there are some things that are less than desirable. If you have accessories that you used with an older model you may have a hard time getting them to transfer to the new model.

It seems that there are compatibility issues with some of these. Another downside is that the audio has not seen any improvements. Even so, the iPod has always had a great sound quality. Most people would be very happy with the iPod classic even with these details.

iPod Nano

The iPod Nano is another incredibly popular model. The newest version has seen an update in the case shape that many people view as an improvement. In addition to the casing design, this is one iPod that is uber affordable and desirable.

The love for the Nano often begins because of the slim case. If you travel frequently and need to put your iPod in your pocket, this can be a major plus for you.

Not only does this Nano have a great shape, but it also has a very clear picture that you won’t believe fits in such a tiny package. There are also pre-installed video games and other great features.

Of course, there is a downside to every model. Some find the wideness of the Nano to be a bit too much. Another problem is that the sound quality is not as great as that of other higher-end iPods. Even so, you can’t go wrong with the Nano if its specifications match your needs.

iPod Shuffle

The shuffle is on the lowest end of the spectrum but still serves a great purpose for many people. This is great because it is very small at about the size of a stick of gum. It has a great price and simple controls.

Of course, the controls can also be considered a downside. They do not offer much flexibility and some might get frustrated with the lack of options. This iPod is not for everyone, but is a great little MP3 player with a kick.

Which One?

After you’ve read these iPod reviews, consider the functions that mean the most to you. There are many to choose from, and have the great Apple quality you’ve come to know and love. No matter what you choose, you’ll sure to be happy with your decision.
